TV Psychology

As surgery draws closer I find myself watching more and more medical programs. Not the uber dramatic life and death style programmes like ER, Trauma and Grey’s Anatomy. The mildly comical everything works out in the end House, Royal Pains and Scrubs variety. Watching these kind of programmes is not necessarily a new thing and may well be due to lack of new material but it has made me think about general pre-op and post-op viewing habits. In general on getting out of hospital I switch from the comedy pre-op viewing to a completely different kind of programme. This new programme choice tends to be of the action-y female kicking ass variety such as Alias, Buffy and even Xina-Warrior princess (yup, I am in fact cringing at this moment but its unfortunately true!) I guess the change is somewhat obvious, before surgery I want life to be light and funny and in the post surgery feeling helpless and vulnerable stages what better to watch than people who are capable of looking after themselves by any means necessary? Not exactly difficult psychology but not really a pattern I had noticed before.
